Thales' Contribution to Mathematics
Considering mathematics, Thales reached a solution of problems through geometry. For Example, the height or distance was calculated by him through geometry. He also used the same scientific method. That method is the method of deduction and reasoning rather than implying to mythology. Therefore, he was a pioneer in discovering new scientific method in mathematics that’s why he is considered as the first true mathematician. Another amazing and remarkable achievement of his was getting, obtaining the theorem, popularly known as Thales theorem on basis of deductive reasoning. In geometry, Thales' Theorem states that if A, B, and C are points on a circle where the line AC is a diameter of a circle, then the angle ∠ABC is a right angle.
His Main contributionThales contributed to astronomy, mathematics, and philosophy. as quoted by Bertrand Russell, "western philosophy begins with Thales." Thales started a new tradition that is denied of previous influence of mythology in providing an explanation of the natural occurrence or existence. All of this brought about revolution in philosophy. Instead of typical, and usual ideas, he developed scientific method by putting away hypothesis and then identified the basic principles. He impacted later Greek thinkers and philosophers like Pythagoras. Thales main belief was that water formed the principles of all things.
"Thales assures that water is the principle of all things; and that god is that mind which shaped and created all things from water." |
